GIALLO

During the last few years I have developed a fascination with the Giallo thriller subgenre, thriller movies from 1970s and 80s Italy. My curiosity led me to start reading books and watching films of the Giallo sub-genre, becoming obsessed with themes and ideas discussed in these films. What triggered my attention, besides the soundtracks, the plots and the well drawn characters for which these films became famous, were the settings: mostly familiar and everyday spaces in which the directors were able to set terrifying stories. When we talk about ‘Giallo’ we talk about two key themes: the “familiar” and the “alien”. The fear can, often, develop in places we know very well - engrained in every day scenarios, someone would call this “the banality of Evil”. The houses we live in, the streets we have walked a thousand times, people we have known forever can change and show an alien light which can destabilise us. The horror lies in this change of intimate settings, shifting from comfort zones to uncanny realities, in which we become passive extras and no longer active actors.
